The plan was to turn each peg taper to match the hole it will go into, so I shouldn't need to the peg shaper. My violin is a new "white" instrument, so the peg holes where drilled straight and under sized. Making my own reamer saved me around $50. Not needing a peg shaper will save me another $50 on a violin that cost me a little over $40 (eBay 220826919720 ). > > So there may not be much point in trying to get a very accurate taper > and smooth finish on your new pegs, when you are going to have to > shave that off when you install them. The real trick will be in getting the fingerboard and belly off so I can re-figure the plates, but I need to replace the $4 string set first to see if that might fix the sound instead. I'm looking at Corelli Crystal strings, but they will come close to doubling what I have in the violin so far. Andy, Dave, and Steve, thanks for your replies too. I'll give a high rake HSS tool a try. Steve said:"... But I couldn't make Violin pegs cheaper than I could buy them, so why bother?" Because I can. I'm hoping to make a violin from scratch (eBay 160647669440), but planned on fixing up a couple of beaters first. It turns out even broken up beaters fetch a bit of cash (eBay 320747929806). It would be nice to make CAM files and CNC all of the parts, but I'll need a router attachment for my mill first. My thinking is, that's what Stradivari would do if he had a CNC. -- Kirk Wallace http://www.wallacecompany.com/machine_shop/ http://www.wallacecompany.com/E45/index.html California, USA ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Doing More with Less: The Next Generation Virtual Desktop What are the key obstacles that have prevented many mid-market businesses from deploying virtual desktops?
