Hi John - my findings too. 

For rough turning RCGT type round inserts take some beating. There are
also hand turning tools for bowls and the like that use these inserts.
They cut just as good as a gouge. 

There are inserts available that are specifically for wood turning,
google search comes up with plenty, but for the small amount of wood
turning I do, round inserts or positive rake ones for Al work fine for
me.
