No, I haven't tried those.  The HSS blanks are just so easy to grind up 
and sharpen, and typically cheaper than carbide inserts, I've never gone 
that route.  Plus, the inserts also tend to have a very small radius on 
them which makes it hard to get a smooth cut on wood.  I usually use 
3/8" bits when turning wood, and that's a much larger radius than you 
get with the typical triangular insert.  Maybe there's a way to use one 
of those round milling inserts if you make your own tool holder though, 
and if the round inserts come in the ones designed for aluminum like you 
mentioned.  The bits that I use leave a finish on the wood inserts that 
only requires a light 400 - 600 grit sandpapering before varnishing.
