Mailing list, IRC and Forum are three different things, and all of them are important. The forum is good because a discussion stay there, and every newcomers can read from others errors and success. is the base of the wiki. when you see other wikis, many times near an explanation there's the link to the discussion that bringed (brought?..sorry..) to the explanation. This way, if my case is a little different from the wiki's i can better dig into the situation.
