What I'd do is rig the slot sensor to a mill, and use the table to run a 
representative
blade through, and see where the sensor switches.  If the blade was, say
.050" wide, and the switching points were .060" apart, then you know it
"expands" the blade by .010", so that is apparently the width of the optical
slot in front of the photocell.
