I like the design of the EC1302B, the heater is on the outside, the temp
sensor is
on the inside of the tip. But, these are obsolete and I don't want to
pay $67 the next
time a temp sensor or heating element goes out. (Maybe they are even
higher now.)
I used to get serviceable irons on eBay for $40 and have a stock of parts to
keep them going. I have two complete sets of these here. (Weller made
a change
in the iron plug, that's why there's an EC1302 and 1302B, I changed
everything
to follow the new pinout.) So, I have 2 EC1302B and 2002 or so boxes at
my home
shop, and a WSL / WMP at work.

I don't like the design of the WSL / WMP quite as much, but the tips are at
least affordable, and the iron has amazing power. i can plainly tell
the difference
between my EC1302 and the WMP. Anything that I can't solder with the WMP
and I grab the 120 W solder gun.

I find the dial temp control (or pushbuttons on the WSL) and digital
readout a
big help. I do everything from micro-micro soldering to fairly heavy power
boards with these irons. I've found them to be quite reliable, too.
I've probably
made over a million connections with them, I do manufacturing here.

I just snagged a WSL / WMP on eBay for $100, hopefully it is as good as the
seller says. I have been using one at my other work for a couple years.
