Yes, I am afraid there is a dark side to technology.. I'm with you. Keeping things somewhat simple is a good idea.
I have an Amana microwave in the basement. We bought it in 1983. It's useful purpose is that when the new-fangled microwave in the kitchen dies after 2-3 years, it comes out of the basement to fill in for the broken microwave until it is fixed, or junked and replaced, and once it is replaced with a the latest "kitchen matching - stylish microwave", it goes back in the basement to wait until it is needed again. It has outlasted at least 3 other new-fangled microwaves since it was semi-retired to the basement. The Amana is built like a tank. I took it apart once when a door spring broke and it is full of real Microswitch click action switches and very few plastic parts. It is very heavy. I need to determine which kid I am going to will that microwave to.. as I am pretty sure it will outlast me.
