I don't know whether you'll have to switch or not. You can still try mplabx, but it may take some effort to get everything going. You can turn in a support ticket now, its just whether or not you want to spend the time getting it going. Personally, after an initial test, I am letting others go through the headache before I try again. The IDE is much better though, so I am using the IDE and debugging with 8.
Why did you pick the 30 series? I prefer the 33 series, although they are 3.3 volts. The ADC's on the 30 series don't seem very linear to me. Most new development seems to be with the 33 series.
