You most definitely _do not_ want to do distribution upgrade, because
it will change the kernel version, but LinuxCNC is built for
particular kernel. In other words - default LinuxCNC installation will
work only with 10.04 and only on default 10.04 kernel.

Of course, You can try to rebuild LinuxCNC on 10.10, if there is RTAI
version of 10.10's kernel, but I suspect that it is not that You are
up to.
LinuxCNC is supported on Ubuntu LTS versions. Next LTS distribution is
due to release in next month, but few days ago it was reported that
there is no RTAI version yet for 3.2.6 kernel, which is in 12.04, so
it seems like no way to predict, when will we get a chance to try out
LinuxCNC on 12.04. But I am really looking forward to it - I started
using LinuxCNC 2 years ago when first experimental versions for 10.04
became available and I was thrilled, because I did not like 8.04.
Can't really explain, why, but I really liked Lucid so much better, so
now I am really waiting for a chance to try out LinuxCNC on the new
12.04.
