If it is brushless, then you need some way to tell the drive where the
rotor is, so that it can energise toe correct poles.

Yes, and that could probably be used to drive your motor. Actually, it
can certainly be used to drive your motor, but you might be a little
short of current resolution as the 8i20 is a 20A drive and that is a
3A motor.

You would need to delve into the poorly-documented mysteries of the
bldc HAL component.
