I took the motor apart to see what the encoder looked like, and I'm 
assuming that these are hall sensors:

   I haven't traced the wires yet, so I still don't know what goes 
where.  It's a brushless servo motor for sure, with a permanent magnet 
rotor.  Considering that this motor came off of a 20 year old embroidery 
machine, it's clean, in really good condition, and the bearings turn 
smoothly.  Now, to figure out how to get a signal out of it...
