On the other hand, the PPMC has enough digital input pins to do a nice

especially if you are not using all the separate limit switch inputs.  See

(I thought I had a schematic of the pendant wiring for the PPMC, but it 
is very similar
to the way the minimill pendant is set up.  I'll try to get that drawing 
on there
shortly.)

These use diodes to encode the switch settings, so you can hook up 7
axis selections (XYZAB plus feedrate and spindle override) and 3 jog
rate selections with only 5 digital inputs.
