If you are limited by software step generation then I strongly advocate a change to a Mesa 5i25 if you have a PCI slot. The pinout may be identical on the DB25 so you have no wiring changes to make, and you might well find that you have very much more performance than you had before unless the previous limit was servo performance. I think that counts as a way to get the performance back.
