Well, one option is the Pico Systems Universal Stepper Controller.  It can
drive 4 axes of step/direction, optionally with encoders, and has 16 digital
inputs and place to mount 8 solid state relays for lube and spindle
control.  (If you need more than 4 axes, you can add another board on
the same parallel port.)  Limit and home switches can be connected simply
to the digital inputs.  You can hook up a jog pendant, too.
