Like with USB. The idea was to have only two types of connector, A for
the host end, B for the device end. Then they introduced Mini B. The
first digital cameras (and some as recent as a couple of years ago) came
out with several non-standard USB plugs - some of which incorporate
other functions. In 2007 the Micro B connector was introduced on cell
phones.

Now there's USB 3.0. The host ends are both ways cross compatible with
original Type A ports but the device end is nothing at all like any
other USB connector.

At least Firewire hasn't had to put up with so many connectors, or any
non-standard proprietary ones. IIRC there's only full and mini sizes for
FW400 and FW800. But Firewire looks to be on a road to doom. USB 2.0 was
nearly as fast as FW400 and cost less, giving FW a big advantage only if
you had many devices - it could handle bandwidth usage better on a
single port.

But now USB 3.0 is faster than FW800. I dunno if it's also been updated
in other ways than speed. I doubt it can do daisy chaining like Firewire.
