Hi all,

Re: Running EMC on "older" computers:

My experience has been that the PICMG form factor has been neglected,
they are available quite cheaply if you lurk ebay.
There are loads with optimistic Buy It Now prices, but my Commell
FS-97DXG2 only cost me £20 about 3 weeks ago.
If anyones in the UK it seems a seller called
techstore8000 has a load and auctions one every now and then.

They've got 2xGb LAN, LVDS, GPIO, RS232/422/485, MiniPCI, etc.
They're about the size of a large ISA card, and if you use the LPT port
they are usually an onboard header - just run a ribbon cable to your
optos etc.
With a motion card you dont have to use a massive backplane, ebay has
loads with just a couple of PCI slots etc.
They're usually powerable without a backplane tho, just a old style
Molex drive connector for +5 and +12.
My newer one with a Core2Duo needs an extra +12V 8 pin EPS connector.
Means an ATX PSU isnt reqd, my current build is in an old rackmount 4U
9x CDROM server box with redundant +5/+12 PSUs.
Just got to work out how to use 14 ISA slots, its a full size backplane
but fortunately its got 4 PCI slots as well.
I've got some 8255 ISA cards Id like to use...
I also like the idea of using the LVDS port to run a laptop LCD in my
control panel, with the VGA going to a nice 1U foldout LCD and
keyboard/mousepad.
I've got a 16U rack to play with so Im getting carried away finally
using up all the tat I've accumulated over the last few years.

Latency test figures are extremely good on the Commell FS-97D.
Almost suspiciously so in fact.
I added them to the Latency Test wiki page but I'll edit them if theres
any change after another run.
