It can be a lot cheaper when buying replacement parts. The little 2KVA
alternator on the farm has grown tired after nearly 30 years and three
Honda motors - it only produces 190 Vac instead of 240. I snipped out
the phase capacitor (or whatever it's called), and whacked in a 10 uF
motor run capacitor I had to hand - now we had only 60 Vac. Adding 2 uF
capacitors in parallel, I found that 20 uF gave 240 V, but the bunch of
six capacitors would never fit into the alternator. Locally, it was $28
for one that would, but on ebay, I could have four for that price from
Hong Kong, with free shipping if 3 weeks was OK.

It's dangerous on ebay, though. While I was in there, some cheap arduino
stuff swam by, and before I knew it, I'd ordered that too. (Including
some really cheap 2A 28v stepdown converters)

Sometimes, though, my parcels end up beside the stack of weekly farming
newspapers at the local newsagent/ licenced post office, because the
deliverer gets lost on the winding roads in these hills. Then when I
call in for the newspaper, the parcels catch up. That works for me, 'cos
there's no extra trip into town to buy the stuff.
