Take a look at how the Emco Compact 5 PC/CNC lathes setup tools for the 
turret. They had a spindle attachment with various OD and ID reference 
points, with a wedge cut out so you could see the inside.

I assume the software had a coordinate map of the setting attachment and 
each tool could be zeroed to one of the positions, which would set the 
offsets.

An adapter to hold that attachment in a chuck would enable it to be used 
on most any CNC lathe, if there was an addon to LCNC with the preset 
coordinates from the left end and axis of the attachment.

For larger tooling a larger attachment would be required.
