Why stepper ? gearing up the speed with a pulley even less sense, they lose so much torque at a sensible lathe spindle speed that I cannot understand the reasoning for going down the wrong rabbit hole.
Just think what would happen if your chatter frequency was anywhere near the stepper resonance too. I do use small lathes (watch (DC) and clockmaker (AC induction motor) sizes) and need to get the RPM up a lot for small stuff.
