Have any of you looked at what you can do with linuxcnc? I cannot
fathom how you could create a gui that configures it. There is stepconf
and pncconf wizards to help get a basic config going - but beyond that
you will be editing hal and ini files. It isn't that bad.
If you are looking for something turnkey - buy something. You will
constrained by its limitations but you said yourself you don't want to
make cnc control your hobby.. Pathpilot is not turnkey. It is made to
run their machines. Its hal is stripped down and missing a lot of
components they don't need. To me it seems like a lot of work for
little gain. You want to run a machine - right? install linuxcnc on
standard computer hardware and be running in a few hours.
Mach3 - you have guis for basic settings. If you want to do things more
complicated (like tool changer) - you are programming VB (non realtime btw)
Mach4 - similar - you have some basic configuration in the gui - but to
do anything more complicated you are programming lua or their plc (again
not realime)
Linuxcnc - basic setup with gui. most everything else can be setup
editing hal files, ini files and the integrated plc that has a gui.
(running realtime of course..)
or
-buy a tormach mill with pathpilot installed. (might be the most
expensive solution)
-Purchase the acorn from centroid. Not too expensive - unless you want
the bells and whistles of the 'ultimate' software (add $499 to the price
of the hardware)

-uccnc seems to get good reviews http://www.cncdrive.com/UCCNC.html
-any of the import cnc controllers..

lots of options out there if you don't want to fiddle. (but of course
you will have to figure out how to setup each of the above systems too
and hope it does what you want.)
as far as screen editing - I never felt the need for it. Sure it would
be neat. I get buy adding side panels to the existing gui for extra
things I need.
Gscreen is a possiblilty also someone is working on a screen editor

Let's change the subject line to something like "How to clone Path Pilot on

now it needs some people to turn Path Pilot into something that will
run on
any machine that runs linuxcnc
The only thing in the way of that is the things that Tormach have done
specifically to make it difficult (or so it seems)
There are folk tweaking Pathpilot configs to work on other machines.
Intriguing...
So; can you comment on those things Tormach have done with hardware as
they created PathPilot; and the ease with which it might be made to run on
more 'ordinary' machines and setups?
