I did 2 things in desperation. I threw away the paper gage and brought it 
to a very gentle touch.  And I went back to a 15mm extra wide raft.  
That half a 32 tooth sprocket is finally going without knocking the raft 
loose, but it took in a hour an 16 minutes just to lay the raft.

I should be able to see if tightening up the x belt helped make better 
teeth by the time I wake up again.
