I think that's a story cut too short. Why can't you run the machine in
back-gear? I really wouldn't anticipate rigid tapping being done
without it.
I do all my rigid tapping on smaller taps in direct drive with the belt on the highest speed setting. This reduces the effective inertia of the motor, for faster reversing. The motor is usually running at 15-20 Hz in this mode. I do 2-56 up to 6-32 taps at 1000 RPM, and 10-32 and 1/4-20 at about
600 RPM.
