Update, you were right, there is no echo in THAT login screen. If I type hard, and a bit slow (that kayboard has a custom fitted swarf cover that screws up my fat fingered typing) I can login and the rest I was able to fix. No network, something had started WICD, killed that, and with no radio's to talk to, it edited /e/n/interfaces to label the enps0 as allow-hotplug. Put that back to auto and rebooted, its all fine and I spent much of an hour trying to fire a pair of crydom 40 amp 400 volt SSR's unsuccsessfully. I have a 12 pack of the HOYMK's so I guess I chisle the JBWeld holding the crydom's and try some Chinese clones. Unfunny thing is that I've already got a 6 pak of the Chinese versions working flawlessly in other machines. Some of them for years. Anyway. its running. With no blanking. Fairly well I believe.
