At or near balance with the encoder, inductance controls the current but when the encoder vs commanded speed error goes up, then the average current will be varied to drive the motor and rebalance for circuit. No complicated reversing involved at all.

But the cores should be iron as ferrites can saturate much easier, losing 95% of their magnetic properties and if they are also operating at their curie point or above it, the ferrites contribution to the inductance is lost forever, it becomes frozen in the austinitic? state, forever non-magnetic until re-annealed in a non-magnetized state. What most techs don't grok is that many of the high performance ferrites have a curie point well below that of boiling water, so there is zero visible discoloration to trigger a memory of curie point concerns if the tech has ever heard of the effect in he first place.
