Along those lines, could curved "teeth" like cycloidal reducers be used with a 
flex element?

I wonder if instead of machined spines, the cup could be made from a sheet 
stamping with the splines simply crimped into the sheet.  (Although that 
wouldn't help Andy with making a homemade one.)
