This is what I bought for verifying RS232 messages which it does by decoding 
the 1'a and 0's.  It's also a logic analyser and has the extras like an 
arbitrary wave form generator, voltmeter etc. for experimenting on the bench 
with electronics in general.

The only reason I don't use mine that much is my 4 channel digital scope with 
logic analyzer sits beside an Agilent arbitrary wave form generator and an 
Agilent 6.5 digit meter.  Rounding out the party are several power supplies and 
a Portable 3Ghz RF Spectrum Analyzer.  

But although the Digilent discovery kit is only 30MHz bandwidth it's still very 
useful.
