If I understand the theory and the various article it's more a sine wave and so
the teeth follow that. What does it mean? Not quite sure. The key comment I
did note was that is that the teeth tips move relative to the root pitch.

Think of taking a toothed belt. Laid flat the crests are the same distance
apart as the root pitch. But bend it and the distance from crest to crest
changes. The root distance doesn't change but the distance between the peaks
does. Otherwise toothed belts wouldn't work on other types of pulleys.

The outer gear with the inner spline has the root and the crests a fixed
distance apart and that doesn't change. As the cup/belt gear is turned into
an elipse the tips of the teeth spread apart. Now the edges of the left and
right side on either side of center tooth also touch the sides of the outer
spline gear. This removes the backlash.

And I believe as they contact those adjacent teeith it's in the shape of a sine
wave hence that's supposed to be the shape of the teeth..

Ideally with a very small diameter carbide cutter LCNC could cut the profile of
a single cutter which is then hardened and can be used to shape the inner
spline gear. With the cup properly supported the outer cup gears could also be
cut but they appear to have a different profile. More work needed here.
