Yes, the ini/hal files you posted are missing almost all stepgen
setup/connection parts.
Thanks for looking into it.
The ones in:
https://github.com/ccatlett1984/LinuxCNC_configs/tree/main/dmc_test
are much more complete
I've now changed to the dmc_test/test.<ini|hal> config.
Partial success. LinuxCNC starts without issues and no errors. And
when I jog, the GUI preview updates the position. Nice! However, the
steppers don't move. So something's still amiss. I assume the
drivers don't receive a step instruction.
Should this example work out-of-the-box or do I need to configure
something? I mean sure, I need to configure everything (MIN_LIMIT,
MAX_VELOCITY, etc.) But using the defaults it should move, right?
Currently the GUI does, the machine unfortunately does not.

The most common causes of no motion on step/dir systems with our hardware are:
1. Too short step times (use double the manufacturers minimum value as a
starting point)
2. wiring errors (polarity, step/dir swapped, using differential wiring
whan ont applicable etc, etc)
3. Too high accel limits so immediate stalls
