I like Enlightenment (E16). I also like having a dock with tasklist and pager. Therefore I didn't upgrade my Gnome(/KDE) stuff to the newer versions that are incompatible with Enlightenment, until last week.
Anyway, I implemented parts of the "Extended Window Manager Hints" handling that is required to be compatible with the newer Gnome/KDE versions.
My primary focus has been on making things work (for me) on RH-8.0 with a Gnome desktop. I have tried not to break backward compatibility (although it probably would be cleaner an more efficient just to take out the old Gnome/KDE stuff). Things also seem to work fairly OK on a RH-8.0 KDE desktop. I have not tested with Gnome>2.0 or KDE>3.0.
Many things work, and some do not. In particular, the "large desktops" do not work as they should with the new Gnome/KDE pagers and tasklists (they simply have not implemented this feature). RH-8.0 comes with gnome-panel-2.0.6. I suggest to upgrade to gnome-panel-2.0.11 which "agrees better" with this E16 patch. Some things I haven't implemented (e.g. the fullscreen hint), and some things don't work as they should (e.g. the maximize hints). And then, of course, there are the bugs...
I'm not sure if/how you want this fairly large patch, so if you are interested, grab it here: http://www.woelders.dk/~kw/stuff/e16/enlightenment-0.16.5-ewmh-kw3.patch.
