"lay off" is more of a slang term, it can mean stop or it can mean to
reduce.  As can be demonstrated be a typical usage "lay off the grog a
bit", you can't stop a little bit, but you can reduce a little bit.

Something I'd want people to lay off is having the NEWS discussion in
this README thread.  I specifically started this thread so as not to
bother the NEWS thread with talk about README files.  Seems it had the
exact opposite affect.  lol
