xsettings has been around for maybe 15 or 20 years. ... e sets the xsettings
"settings" for fonts - gtk uses these. my screenshot shows both emacs and gedit
using the font i selected... it works for me here.

I don't know. My screenshot has gedit there - it's gtk3. it works. it changes
font. using e's font settings dialog. NOT ~/.Xresources.
