Because, as I mentioned in yet another off-topic thread, Linux makes a
better story.
One man sits at home and writes an operating system that threatens to topple
the Microsoft hegemony!
Granted, it's not entirely accurate, but it's sure David and Goliath,
revenge of the underdog, and all that jazz. And Linus loves to play the
media game.

Because they count wrong. ;-)
The computer is, for most "mere mortals", a network appliance. It's use is
90+% email, web browsing, and occasional word processing.
For many of these people, their "environment" is their portal. Be that AOL,
Hotmail, or Yahoo! Two of these three are dependent upon BSD to function.
So, how do you count Hotmail's alleged nearly 100 million users. And
Yahoo!'s similar number?
