I did check those, Allen, and discovered that Word files were included (and
mapped to Word), so those should be ok by this logic.

I also noted that jpeg's and gif's are not even included in the file
mappings, but that shouldn't affect their display in a message. Or at least,
I wouldn't think it should.

Just to reiterate my problem:

Attached jpeg's in, e.g., newsgroup messages do not display in the message
body, even though I have this option turned on. If I send a Mac-created
(with GraphicConverter) jpeg to myself, it does display just fine. Same with
PICT files. It does not seem to be memory-related; I've increased E's memory
allotment to 21000 in the Get Info box with no effect (if it really needs
more than this to convert a picture, then something is seriously wrong,
imo!).

A possibly (perhaps likely) related issue is that Word files I receive as
attachments from PC users are not recognized as Word files when saved. Word
knows it's one of its own files, so I can drop it onto Word's icon, or open
it with Word, but double-clicking on it won't work.

This all seemed to start when I upgraded to Mac OS 9.1. (Unfortunately, the
backup I have that might enable me to restore my Internet settings to
pre-Mac OS 9.1 is on my FireWire drive that died last week.)
