Well, after all of that, the problem does, indeed, seemed to be solved by
making some changes in the Internet control panel. Actually, I changed
nothing for the Word settings, but I did add file mappings for jpeg's and
gif's. After doing that, I launched Entourage, but the files still were not
appearing as expected.
But...after a restart, suddenly things were OK. Since (I thought) Entourage
accesses the Internet prefs on each launch, I didn't think a restart would
be needed. Apparently it is, though.
It does seem strange that Word files, which weren't being recognized, work
just fine now, even though I didn't change anything. Perhaps it was just the
fact of accessing the data base.
