And there's a late addition not in the menus or help, but reputedly in the
Guide somewhere:

If the regular Refresh (command-L) doesn't reveal messages known to be on
the server (showing in the Unread message Count) of an IMAP account, do
option-command-L. This will (I think) usually only occur in folders other
than the INBOX, when messages are moved by a rule. (Maybe INBOX too, but it
never happened to me there.) It works every time, in my experience
