You got it right there.
The client had four different Eudora folders, and I tried them all, especially the one where the active application resided. A simple search revealed another renamed Eudora folder with the clients name.....
Importing worked flawlessly and showed 1127 ‘in’ messages, where Eudora said there where ‘only’ 600+...
Sorry to bother this list with this simple problem, but I couldn’t figure out what it was by then.

Are you sure they are selecting the right 'Eudora folder'?
If you still can't get it to import, you can import the mail folders in the
'Eudora folder' individually by selecting "Import message from an MBOX
format text file" on the 1st screen of the Entourage Import dialog and then
navigating to the Eudora mail folders.
