It's really stupid. There's a macro to get rid of them (search the newsgroup under auto correct or contacts to find it; or I could probably send it if you can't find it easily), but it's pretty worthless since they just get imported again (and again and again...). One way to avoid too many instances is to have Word always prompt you to save the Normal template and if you're sure you haven't made any real changes to it, say "no" when it asks if you want to save Normal. That way you don't save the multiple contact entries when you quit if you haven't otherwise changed Normal. Hopefully MS will fix this bug in a future release :-).
