I don't see the point in doing that.  It's easier to just go to Mail & News
Preferences and uncheck the option to "Mark Message as Read after
displaying..." - at least that's how I have my preferences set up.  Have you
tried that as well (though I doubt it will make a difference)?

Actually, Command-T marks messages as read, which is what you want.
Command-Shift-T marks them as unread.
