I lost some of the messages in this thread, so I am not sure that the
following suggestion is relevant to the topic at hand, or whether it has
already been mentioned:

Earthlink now has an authenticated SMTP server. This means that their
subscribers can send outgoing mail via Earthlink, even when not connected to
the internet via Earthlink. To configure this in Entourage X, open the
account settings and enter smtpauth.earthlink.net for your SMTP server.
Then hit the button for "Advanced sending options", check the box for "SMTP
server requires authentication", and enter your account ID and password.

I have successfully used their ASMTP server while connected at several
locations outside the Earthlink network. Note, however, that it will not
work at some internet cafes. The reason for this is that these cafes are
set up to intercept requests to your SMTP server and automatically divert
them to their own SMTP server. For most of their customers this is a
transparent way to provide outgoing mail service. But if your computer is
attempting an authenticated SMTP connection (with ID and password), the
cafe's non-authenticated server may choke on it, without providing a clear
error message. The solution in that case is to switch to another account,
perhaps one set up to use the non-authenticated Earthlink SMTP server, retry
your connection, and let the cafe's server substitution mechanism work.
