Title: Re: A problem? - SOLVED
Barry,

Great idea. When you explained how the export function worked, I looked at the Mbox folders in the package that was exported. Surely enough, one of the Sent Items subfolders had stopped barely into the list of messages. That message displayed properly when I called it up on screen, but exporting it resulted in a message with no date, no subject, and no contents.

Turns out that this was a message originally sent in OE 5.1 in 2000. It had been successfully imported into E’04, EX, and E’04 without my ever realizing that somehow it had been corrupted. I only know that it was already corrupted when imported into EX, as that version also did not create an MBOX file.

Using a combination of copying another message, editing the message within E’04, and changing the date in BBEdit Lite, I was able to create a message with the original content that E’04 will sort in the right date in the proper folder.

Problem Solved. Now the export function works as intended. It’s comforting to know that
  1. The database integrity was maintained despite a flawed message
  2. The message could still be read despite severe problems with it
  3. Such great help continues to be available on this list (as it has been since the old OE days)

Today I tried to use the Archive function in E ‘04 to export my messages for safekeeping. An error message said that there was an error exporting one of my messages and that my database might be corrupted. Following the message’s advice, I ran the Database utility. It presented a clean bill of health.

There are no obvious problems with the way E’04 is functioning apart from this one issue. Is the problem more likely with the Utility, the Database, or perhaps with a rogue email that the Utility just doesn’t like?

It is likely a problem message, rather than corruption in the database.

The export function is simply a GUI fornt end for functionality that has been in there since day 1 – just drag a folder to the desktop, and it will create an MBOX file. If you do this individually for each folder, you may well be able to track down where the problem message lies.
