Of course using "date sent" goes out the window with a sequence like this
(using Pacific Daylight Time for all):

  - Michael sent a message about 1:36 am on 7/22/04
  - Paul responded at about 8:06 am on 7/22/04 ---but his computer listed
the date sent as 8:06 am on 7/25/04 (one of those time warp instances).
  - Then Michael responded again at about 3:39 pm on 7/22/04.

Sorting by "date sent" shows Michael's final reply before Paul's
intermediate explanation.

Date Sent is good as long as everybody keeps their computer clocks accurate
since that time is set by the sending email client. Date Received is even
more problematic since it relies on the date/time when you decide to
download the mail from the mail server. So I guess that assuming the
internet is moving at near real time, then the time received by your mail
server would be the most meaningful in terms of sorting mail. Of course that
depends on the server ensuring that its clock is accurate.
