So this spreadsheet is in English Units. Most people are measuring in feet and inches or feet and tenths. Therefore all of the data they are collecting would need to be converted into metric before they could use a metric spreadsheet. Therefore it stands to reason that the basic spreadsheet reflect the units in which the measurements are being taken. I have a separate column for inches of girth because may people are measuring girth in inches, and some of the formulas people are using, use inches so I added a girth in inches table. I am not opposed to having a metric spreadsheet for those measuring using metric measures. A set of formulas could be incorporated to convert from one standard to the other down the road when a master sheet is created. But I do not think this is the time to change all of the data forms into metric. First we need to compile our existing data into this form. and that needs to be as painless as possible. The most recent discussion http://www.nativetreesociety.org/measure/database/database.htm outlined many of the categories that could be incorporated. I think this is the most important project facing ENTS as a scientific organization at the moment - the compilation and protection of the data we have collected and will collect. Toward that end I have created a spreadsheet that incorporates all of the various data fields we have discussed.
