How "fast" was the lens being used on the (manual focus) AE-1?  If he/she is
using a standard 50mm lens, it was probably an f1.8 lens, along with the
split prism view finder, it may explain things are a little easier to see.

However, as soon as you put on any consumer grade zoom lens (typically at
f3.5 or worse) on the AE-1, it will be just as difficult to see enough
details for focusing, you would be guessing it half the time in this dark
environment.  I used to have an A-1 until 5 years ago, I was getting tired
of the twiddling back and forth on the focusing ring until I am guessing it
is the right focus.

I don't think Rebel G is terribly good in AF performance when compared to
the more recent bodies.
