FWIW, Rayovac make a three-way charger (NiCads, their own rechargeable
alkalines, and NiMH) that holds eight AA or AAA or C cells at once, but you
can charge in any quantity. I think it set me back about $14, I bought 16
NIMH batteries off eBay for $24. As for getting them in and out of the
battery pack, try wrapping a piece of clear tape around each battery and
sticking the ends together to form flap handle. It works for me.
