I have one. I front of the camera it's effective angle is plenty wide
(line of sight I'd say to the receptor). If you are behind the camera
you have to reach over it to establish line of sight. However, once
when I was doing quite a bit of copy work I found I was able to "bounce"
the signal from a target placed on a stand.

Yes - Canon has. One of the personal functions on the EOS 1v enables a
"trap focus" setting. Focus on a spot (remove the target focused on.
Use the big brother to your remote to hold the shutter open open. It
won't go off until something again comes into focus. Battery companies
like this PF. And, there's another PF to reduce shutter lag time.
