bokeh IMHO is really something important for the total effect of a picture.
When I use the 70-200 2.8L wide open, with late afternoon sun, you have an
incredible background: I'm not speaking of the out of focus effect but of
how colour blend together, the light of the background, it's like a
'painting' in front of which you can see a nearly 3D subject.
The way the background shows makes very different the way you see the main
subject.
In my 'Italian English' is really difficult to explain the difference that I
see from this lens compared to other consumer lenses.
Just went to the seaside last weekend and i took some pictures of my
children on the beech. There was no sand but tiny rounded coloured stones:
believe me the effect of texture coming out from the bokeh is really nice.

P.S. Leica lenses are mainly famous for their bokeh (apart the general
quality).

Yes Henry, and while I respect your knowledge consider typing "lens" on
Google and note you will get back 1.9 Million+ hits.
Ity means nothing. But do check out the 400+ hits you get back from "bokeh"
and note they are mostly from internet user groups and those very
knowledgable internet journalists (ahh yes, the Internet. A bastion for
mediocre journalism!). They try to explain the meaning of bokeh. I would
bet none understand optical design, constant circle of confusion of an
image, coma, or other types of aberrations, yet they are ready to explain
optical design as it relates to bokeh! ;-)
Note, there is nothing in those hits from any lens manufacturers.
One last comment, if you look at some of the examples of bad bokeh note the
jagged lines follow the shape of the aperture. A more hexagonal shape
produces less smooth out of focus areas than a rounder aperture. Bottom
line is that one should buy good lenses with round apertures.
