Hi all,
First of all, thanks a lot for the big bunch of answers. They're very helpful. I
forwarded all to my friend, who's now convinced of making some test and we'll
probably do a side by side test against my 75-300IS. I'll probably use the setups
that some of you have mentioned in your own test activities.
This "circle of difussion" that the lens shows in many pics taken at the long end is
absolutely unacceptable.
I agree with most of you on most of things, but I'd like to clear up some points.
The guy is not posting here because he's not a Canonite like us, he just want some
holiday pics.
Sure if I go on the same trip, I'd rent a 300f2.8L+2xTC but for him it was of equal
importance to take nice snaps of his kids and wife playing (@ 28mm) and the big cats
and other wild fauna on the park, "just for a nice memory". Well, I tried to
convince him to go for a 28-135IS, but... here is where the already mentioned
"criteria" or "standard" comes in.
The gear we own "should" be somehow backed by the use we give to it. Of course, if
you have a EOS 1v + 28-70f2.8L to take family snaps at chrismas night on Kodak Zoom
that's ok for me, but I think I you get what I want to say.
This case made me think a bit about all those discussions of the 300f2.8IS vs non
IS or the tales about the 75-300IS, and even of the discussion on 3rd party vs.
Canon.
It's my opinion that all discussions that state "that's crap" and "that's wonderful"
cannot be on a absolute truth basis. The ratio (quality:price) / usage should be
some kind of ruler.
Well, those are only thoughts coming to my mind triggered by the discussion and I
just wanted to share 'em.
Thanks again for the help. I'm very curious to test the lens under controlled
conditions and see what it gives. Maybe with some conclusive tests, he can get some
refund or repair.
Best regards,
Gerard.
