Peter .... I've used Energizer AA 1200mAh NiMH batteries in my Canon speedlites (420EZ, 420EX, & 550EX) for over two years and I'm very pleased with them. They last a lot longer than NiCDs and are much less expensive than using alkalines. When they eventually die I'll replace them with 1800mAh PowerEX AAs from http://www.powerexusa.com/
