Exactly my point. Before your try another camera, On the REBEL cameras, "*" activates very-fat spot partial metering and also activates exposure lock. If you lock the exposure, the meter reading will not change. A better way to do such experiments is to fill the entire viewfinder with a constant light source. That way, you do not have to use partial metering. Don't have a lightbox? Have your computer display a blank white screen. Set your lens to manual focus and push your lens right up to the screen, and use the camera strap to cover the viewfinder.
