Oops, I should have mentioned that this works best with a long persistence display, such as the LCD display from a laptop, or a flat-panel display. If your camera is being affected by screen refresh, you can still use this method. Set your lens to manual focus, and your camera to AI-SERVO (SPORTS mode if you use a REBEL) to enable continuous metering, the hold the shutter button halfway with the lens right up to the screen. Take the HIGHEST READING, and ignore the rest.
